Assessing home insurance before the holidays can be beneficial
The holidays can be a particularly hectic time, filled with trips to the shopping mall, long drives to relatives and gatherings with family members.
Because of this, many consumers who are planning holiday get-togethers may want to assess their home insurance coverage.
“Insurance companies see insurance claims spike during the holiday season, but many losses and claims can be avoided if homeowners take certain precautions beforehand,” said Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Robert Pratter. “Take a few minutes to review your insurance policy coverage before your holiday celebration begins.”
Pratter says holiday hosts may want to ensure that a policy covers liabilities such as the medical and legal expenses of guests getting injured in the home. Consumers may wish to take precautions against accidents by keeping sidewalks and driveways free from snow, while making a home well-lit and in good repair.
For example, many consumers may want to review their coverage in order to see if liquor liability claims can be made under their policies. This can ensure that a homeowner is not responsible for any reckless behavior on behalf of guests.
In addition, many consumers may benefit from comparing their home insurance policies to their party’s needs as added benefits could help reduce liabilities.
